A few events that happened in the past few months has stirred my emotions in many different directions. From the joy of a destination wedding, to heartbreaks and the vulnerability of losing a relative to illness. It is both a blessing and a curse that I have extreme emotions during these events. It can get a little overwhelming, but it reminds you how human it is to feel.
I attended a beautiful wedding of my good friend, Sasi, in Phuket recently. It was a spectacular celebration of an arranged marriage. Many would wonder and question the idea of an arranged marriage. I was no exception.
I took some time to talk to the bride-to-be the night before the wedding festivities. “How do you know if he’s the one when you’ve only met a couple of times?”. Her answer was so pure that I got reminded about how simple the idea of love and life is. “Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, myself included. When I chose to marry him, I chose to love every part of him.”
With this idea, I felt what was missing in society nowadays, humility. Everyone is in the race to be better, stronger, wiser. Driven by ego, we forgot that we’re all a little flawed and how privileged we are to love and be loved.
We start to judge other’s life choices thinking that we know better. We forgot the simple fact that we are all human and it is ok to not be ok. Life is filled with unexpected events that puts you in a position to make decisions that will eventually mould your life a certain way.
I think many of us are fearful of the circumstances of those decisions. However,I do not think it is realistic to be absolutely sure of your fate or destiny. Life is organic like that. There is beauty in the unknown and when I say happiness is a choice, it is the ability to look at the bright side through every circumstance and to walk through life with a strong faith that, hey, everything’s gonna be alright.
